Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers, in plain language

Everything people ask us most often, answered plainly. If your question isn’t here, our comfort advisors are happy to help.

Is a lift chair only for people with mobility challenges?

No. Anyone can buy a NurtureLift, and nothing about the chair is restricted or gated.

What is true is what the chair was built to do. Every model is a Health Canada Class 1 licensed medical device, designed from the frame up as an assistive chair for people who need mechanical help to rise and be seated safely. That's its purpose, whoever ends up sitting in it, and it's why these chairs are engineered rather differently from an ordinary recliner.

Where the distinction genuinely matters is tax. A prescribed chair is zero-rated in Canada, meaning no GST/HST and no QST in Québec, taken straight off the invoice. That exemption depends on a written prescription confirming a qualifying disability, so someone buying purely for the comfort of it pays tax like on any other purchase. Same chair, same warranty, same white-glove delivery, different invoice.

And the door to that exemption is wider than most people expect. Arthritis, back and joint conditions, heart and pulmonary conditions, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, neurological conditions, these are among the conditions the CRA recognises, and plenty of people living with them have never once pictured themselves in "a lift chair."

If standing up has quietly become something you plan around, ask your doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or registered nurse. One conversation tells you where you stand, and we handle the paperwork from there.

Can I sleep in a lift chair every night?

Yes. Our chairs are engineered for continuous daily use rather than occasional use, with engineered hardwood frames, memory foam seating, and German OKIN motors quiet enough not to wake anyone in the house.

If the chair is going to be where you sleep, we'd point you toward Zero Gravity with infinite positioning, so Nestle, Repose, Smooth or Elevation, letting you change your angle through the night without having to get up and reset yourself. Heat and air lumbar earn their keep on the long nights.

Whether sleeping seated is the right choice for you is a question for your own practitioner, not for us. What we can promise is that if that's how you rest, the chair is engineered to take it, night after night.

Do doctors recommend sleeping in recliners?

That's genuinely a question for your own clinician. It depends entirely on you, and we're not in a position to answer it. We build the chair. We don't assess the person sitting in it.

What we can tell you is where a lift chair sits. It's recognised assistive equipment, not a novelty. Every NurtureLift model is Health Canada Class 1 licensed and SOR/98-282 compliant, and our Health Canada licence number is available on request. A prescription for one can be written by a physician, a medical specialist, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist or a registered nurse.

That prescription does something practical, too. Under CRA publication GI-133, a prescribed lift chair is zero-rated, with no GST/HST and no QST in Québec. On a $2,799 chair that's $364 saved in Ontario and $419 in Québec, taken straight off your invoice rather than claimed back later.

If your practitioner has suggested resting at an incline, bring us the details and we'll help you choose the model that holds that position most comfortably.

Is sleeping in a recliner bad for your back?

We can't answer that for your back, and you should be sceptical of any furniture company that says it can. What positions suit you is a conversation for your practitioner.

What we can talk about is support. Much of the stiffness people describe after a night in a chair comes from slumping: a flat back with nothing filling the curve of your lower spine leaves you unsupported for hours. That's the part we design against.

Air lumbar and power lumbar let you adjust support into the curve of your lower back rather than leaving a gap behind it. Infinite positioning means you're never locked at a single angle all night. And because the whole chair moves at the touch of a button, shifting position doesn't require getting up.

Tell your practitioner what you're finding uncomfortable, then tell us what they recommend, and we'll match you to the chair that holds that position effortlessly.

Why do I sleep better in a lift chair than in my bed?

It's a genuinely common experience, and it tends to surprise the people who have it.

Mostly it comes down to adjustability. A bed offers you one flat surface and asks your body to accommodate it. A NurtureLift lets you set your back, your legs and, on our 3-motor and 4-motor models, your head exactly where you want them, then change your mind at 2am without getting up. Your weight settles across the whole chair rather than pressing into hips and shoulders.

Add heat through the seat and a slow air massage to wind down with, and settling in stops being the effortful part of the evening.

Why that suits you specifically is worth asking your practitioner about. We're just glad you're comfortable.

What's the difference between a standard lift chair and a Zero Gravity lift chair?

It comes down to how many motors are doing the work.

A standard (2-motor) chair moves the backrest and footrest along one linked path, so you travel from upright to reclined with the two tied together. It lifts you to standing beautifully and reclines comfortably. Our Highland works this way.

A Zero Gravity chair drives backrest and footrest independently, so your legs can rise above heart level while your back opens to a wide, neutral angle. It's the position most people settle into and stay in, supported evenly, with nothing to hold up yourself. Our 3-motor models add a powered headrest or independent power lumbar, and the 4-motor Elevation controls backrest, footrest, headrest and lift all separately.

The short version: a standard chair gives you positions. A Zero Gravity chair gives you your position, plus infinite small adjustments around it.

Nearly every NurtureLift model includes Zero Gravity. Ascend is the deliberate exception, built instead around independent power lumbar and clinical lift assistance.

What's the difference between air massage and vibration massage?

Vibration massage uses small motors that buzz against the chair frame. It's the inexpensive approach, and you feel it as a hum sitting on top of the upholstery, pleasant for a few minutes, and loud enough to compete with the television.

Air massage, which is what we build, uses pneumatic chambers hidden inside the chair that inflate and release in sequence. Instead of a buzz, you get a slow rolling press and let-go that travels through the chair. It's quiet, and it feels far more like hands than like a machine.

Our wellness models, Nestle, Repose, Indulgence, Flow and Elevation, use 4-zone pneumatic air massage, so you can direct it where you actually want it.

We chose air over vibration for one simple reason: vibration is a feature you demonstrate once, and air is one you actually live with. It's a comfort feature either way, and we're careful not to dress it up as anything more than that.

Will this chair look like medical equipment?

No, and that's entirely deliberate.

Your chair is a Health Canada Class 1 licensed medical device, engineered to lift and support you safely. It simply doesn't announce it to the room.

There's no chrome tubing, no exposed hardware, no clinical white plastic, no hospital silhouette. What you get is engineered hardwood, memory foam, and considered colourways: Ecru, Bronze, Graphite, Chestnut, Truffle, Mocha. The controls tuck away. The lift mechanism is completely hidden. Our Glide even sits inches from the wall, so it works in a living room rather than a spare room.

We've never accepted that getting the support you need should mean redecorating your home around it.

Guests will notice the chair. They won't notice why you chose it.
